My anime viewing history.

Yesterday, a discussion arose on the FB group for our local anime group…  How many shows had we watched this season?  This year?  How did this compare to past seasons?  Past years?

So, I looked at my records on Anime-Planet and posted the numbers.  This morning, on half a cup of coffee, I decided to make a graph and see how it looked.  Why?  I have no idea, it just seemed like a good idea at the time.  “It seemed like a good idea at the time” has gotten me into all sorts of trouble over the years…  (I’ll leave the story of the six hour round trip for pizza for another time.)  Lack of caffeine doesn’t help much.

Anhow, here ’tis the graph.  I apologize in advance, I use Photoshop to edit photographs not create graphics…  so some of the add-on annotations I made on top of the Google Sheets graph look a little wonky.

What do your numbers look like?

  1. I don’t have a graphic to throw up for you here but my watch history is fairly consistent. I mostly watch weekends with an occasional watch in the week (like a film or something). Cool to see your stats though.

  2. This year I’ve pretty consistently had between 10 and 16 shows per season. Though I watch a lot of older anime in binge sessions in addition to the currently streaming stuff so not really sure how many I actually watch in a year.

  3. A couple of months ago I deleted my entire MAL; it was liberating (I drop shows more freely, or pick them back up more easily). But as a result, I can’t really answer the question. I’d say, I’m pretty constantly watching ~23 shows a season since around 2011. I think around 2013/14 I was sometimes up to around 27 shows. I think I might have watched slightly less this year than last, but that might be a false impression (in the sense that more shows are airing, which means that there are more shows that I’m NOT watching, which in turn creates the impression that watch less, when I actually don’t). But I don’t have the numbers, so who knows?

      1. I’m now curious about this season. Let me see (in alphabetical order):

        Ballroom e Youkusou
Black Clover (it’s a 51 ep anime, so I expect it to be dropped at some time; not yet, though)
        Blend S
        Classicaloid 2
        Enmusubi no Youko Chan
        Fate/Apocrypha
        Himouto Umaru Chan 2
        Houseki no Kuni
        Housuki no Reitetsu 2
Itsudatte Bokura no Koi wa 10 Centi Datta (first episode aired this week)
        Just Because
        Juuni Taisen
        Kekkai Sensen & Beyond
        Kino no Tabi
        Konohana Kitan
Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau
        Mahoujin Guru Guru
        Mahoutsukai no Yome
        Netjuu no Susume
        Osomatsu-san 2
3-gatsu no Lion 2 (placed here because “San”)
        Shoujo Shumatsu Ryouko
        Shoukugeki no Soma 3
        UQ Holder
        Urahara
Youkai Apartment no Yuuga no Nichijou

26 shows. I dropped Animegataris, Shobitch and Cocktail. I’m not watching any shorts for the time in many seasons. Black Clover is endangered, and 10 Centi hasn’t quite proven itself yet (it’s cute, but nothing special so far).

          1. Usually, I aim for 2 – 3 anime in the morning (when I come home from work), and 1 – 2 anime in the evening (before I go to work). That’s between 3 – 5 anime per day. Of course, that doesn’t always work out. This season is especially lopsided; with the weekend loaded, but sometimes nothing at all in the morning/evening. As a result, I’m addtionally watching older stuff this season. (I’m currently re-watching Fantastic Children, which is a must-watch, IMO, for SF/F fans. Too few people seem to have seen it.)

          2. Especially if you consider that one live-action movie usually lasts longer than three anime episodes together (especially if you cut the openings/endings/previews – like I often do).
