Waiting on a winter wonderland… Anticipating Winter 2018!

Yes, I know, it’s a Christmas song.  And playing Christmas songs after the holiday season is rather tasteless…  But once the title popped into my head, I couldn’t get it out except by using it.

Anyhow, hit the jump and let’s take a look at a few of the shows I’m anticipating for Winter 2018!

Just as a reminder, shows that I am planning on watching are in bold, shows my wife and I are planning on watching together are in bold italics.

A Place Further than the Universe & Yuru Camp

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I’m huge fan of Encouragement of Climb/Yama no Susume: CGHAA, Cute Girls Having an Adventure.  (I genre I just made up, and which would also probably encompass Non Non Biyori…)

Universe appears to me more philosophical and Camp more slice-of-life, but both appear to be worth a look see.

Dagashi Kashi 2

Honestly, I may or may not watch this.  The first season was good, but by the end it seemed to have run out of steam and gotten a little repetitive.  If I do watch it, it will be with little patience.

Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles / Rāmen Daisuki Koizumi-san

Food and cute girls…  A winning combination for Wakako-Zake and Gourmet Girl Graffiti…  Might as well check it out.

Violet Evergarden

Nobody seems to be quite sure what this will be about – but an original production by KyoAni goes straight onto my to-be-watched list.  Why?  Do I really need to say anything more than KyoAni?

Citrus

Sure, why not?  It looks to have possibilities.  Plus, next to Violet, it’s going to be one of the most talked about shows this season.  Which is probably an awful reason to watch a show…

Overlord 2nd Season

I watched the first season with equal parts interest and annoyance…  It wasn’t bad, but it had some awful pacing and “suddenly this other stuff happens” problems. It was sufficiently good that I’ll at least check out the 2nd season.

IDOLISH7

Even though I often bounce hard off of boy-band shows, I can’t resist checking out idol shows.  I just have to keep my expectations in check, which will be difficult with IDOLISH7 following hard on the heels of SideM.

Märchen Mädchen

Seems cute enough…  Actually there’s an overload of CGDCT/moe this season, not that there’s anything wrong with that.  (Contrary to the opinions of some.)

Continuing Shows:

March comes in like a Lion (3-gatsu no Lion) and The Ancient Magus Bride

As per usual, what I watch depends mostly on who picks up what…  And equally per usual I check out a great deal more than what I list here.  This is just a quick look at the top of the list.

My Schedule page has been updated, and as always you can check there for a complete list of what I’m watching this season.

Anyhow, what are you looking forward to in the Winter 2018 anime season?  Drop a comment and let us know!

  1. The news that Violet Evergarden would be a Netflix series got this season off to a roaring stop for me, since that was the series I was the most excited about.

Others I might be interested in, depending on which services pick them up:
    Fate/Extra
    Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card Arc
Marchen Madchen (The concept sounds cool, but the track records of the director and studio have me worried that it might end up being a fanservice fest)
    Yuru Camp
    The Ramen Show

    1. Yah. I put Evergarden down before realizing it’s on Netflix. But… It’s listed as premiering on the 11th in the UK, so just maybe they’re bending a little bit. Crossing my fingers and toes!

I figured Cardcaptor and the Ramen Show would be on your list. The latter is in both of our wheelhouses.

  2. Farther than the Universe had a quite good premier; better than expected (director of Hanamayata).

Overlord 2 had a quite good premier, too, but it also reminded me what’s not so good about it. Same old, really.

There’s a cooking show with the characters from Fate/Stay Night, and, surprisingly, I liked the first episode.

Violet Evergarden has me curious, but not excited. I didn’t like many of KyoAni’s fantasy/sf offersings, so I’m a tad wary. It being an original production makes me more wary rather than less. Could be one of the season’s best, though, if they produce a hit.

I’m terribly curious about Pop Team Epic. I hope for ultimate absurd humour.

Gakuen Babysitters has an adorable preview.

The CGDCT show I’m guessing I’ll like best is Mitsuboshi Colours, and Takagi san looks like a cute gag comedy (I’m hoping they’ll minimize story and go for a Tonari no Seki kun skit-based approach).

Hakumei to Mikochi and Miira no Kaikata look cute.

Killing Bites could be fun, too. I was about to dismiss it when I heard the main girl is a honey badger. I watched the preview, and… well, it could just work out in a Juuni-Taisen sort of way.

Almost everything is wait and see, this season, but there’s a lot of potential.

    1. I’ll more to say on Further when I get to my First Impressions post, but I liked it very much.

Overlord isn’t streaming in the US that I can find, which isn’t really a problem as it’s not one of my “must watches”.

Indeed, there’s plenty of CGDCT type shows this season… I can’t believe how many times I wrote “well the girls are cute” in this post!

Mitsuboshi Colours and Miira no Kaikata are both on my list too. I’ve gotten in the habit of cutting off the anticipation post at about 8-10 though.

My wife is planning on watching Gakuen Babysitters, so I’ll wait and see what her verdict is. It don’t dislike the premise, it just doesn’t catch my eye.
