Spring 2018 – Week 12, finales abound!

It’s been a long trip we’ve made together…  there’s been some highs, been some lows, but Spring 2018 is finally over.  This week, I wrap up the rest finales in my own inimitable grumpy old man style.  Give it a read, and drop me a comment letting me know what you think!

The shows that I am watching are in bold, shows my wife and I are watching together are in bold italics.  Question marks denote shows not watched yet (during the premiere weeks), and strikethrough marks dropped shows.

Comic Girls Ep 12 (Finale)

The other girls move out, and Kaos is left to fend for herself…  From a certain point of view, the bulk of the episode could be viewed thematically as something as a clip show… They leaned really hard on the same themes (“Kaos is borderline (in)competent”, “Kaos lacks self assurance”, “Kaos is a crybaby”) that have featured large in the show so far.

Then, suddenly, ganbatte! – and her manuscript is done and turned in on time.  Meh.  Not the weakest finale I’ve ever seen, but I don’t think Kaos was strong enough to carry an episode on her own.

Crossing Time Ep 12 (Finale)

We return to the girls in the first ep, and I don’t really remember much more about it.

Hinamatsuri Ep  12 (Finale)

A tale in two halves…  The first half, centering around Hina, Hitomi, and more absurd comedy was pitch-perfect Hinamatsuri.  The second, catching up with Mao and explaining the flash forward in the first ep…  Funny enough, right in line with the rest of the series – and honestly, I have to say a waste of the viewer’s time.

My Hero Academia 3 /  Boku no Hero Academia 3 Ep 12 (Ep 50) / Ep 13 (Ep 51)

A two part arc that was mostly filler…  but not actually filler.  We don’t actually have a critical term of art that covers material that doesn’t advance the plot much, but which is still important in terms of the plot.  The central action was moving the students into the dorms, hopefully to be able to protect them against various looming threats…  It seems to me, given what a shit poor job US has done protecting the students to date, that it’s more like collecting all the targets into one box.

The real problem is Kurogiri (Black Mist), his Quirk (Warp Gate) really screws with plotting in the same way Star Trek‘s transporters did.  Maybe now that he’s going up the river that will change.

The emotional heart though…  All Might’s impassioned plea to Midoriya Inko (Deku’s mom) to allow Deku to continue at UA under his tutelage.   It’s not an accident that his position while pleading with her is the most submissive one in Japanese culture.  The empty sleeve… a heartrending reminder that of what and who Yagi Toshinori was and the price he’s paid.

It would be interesting if they dove deeper into this unanswered question…

Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori Ep 11-12 (Finale)

Rokuhoudou coasted into a simple quiet ending…  And it actually worked.  They stepped back from (most of) the dramatics and just let the characters enjoy their New Year’s Eve celebrations.  And then…  sigh…  They blew the end of Sui’s arc.

I’d hoped the repaired cup was foreshadowing…  But that was not to be.  He shut Sui down pretty coldly (after accepting his hospitality, which makes it worse).  I guess you could argue that a bit of bitter made the sweet all the sweeter…  But I don’t have to like it.

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online Ep 11-12 (Finale)

The last few episodes have basically been a speedrun aimed at getting to this point…  LLENN and Pitohui facing off one-on-one in one of the overamped action sequences that are a practically a SAO trademark.  They even upped the ante by featuring not one but two overpowered main characters.  Plot wise, it was kinda weak, but it was also fun in a turn-off-your-brain kinda fashion.  Don’t think too hard about how many bullets were fired to no effect, or how LLENN managed to not kill Pito and M when they were all but trapped in a box!

The denouement/finale played out pretty much as expected…  no surprise, no shocks.  There were things meant to be surprises and shocks, but they were all foreshadowed so heavily that the audience knew long before the characters.

Tada-kun wa Koi wo Shinai / Tada Never Falls in Love Ep 12-13 (Finale)

Let’s call this The Episode Of Big Reveals.  It was also the Episode Of Stuff The Viewer Pretty Much Knew Already.  The result of the latter is that (once again) the entire episode fell flat.  About the only “surprise” was Tada’s big emotional moment, and like last week I had a hard time buying it.  They simply spent too much time building him up as unemotional.

The finale…  The finale was actually working pretty good.  Tada discovered and admitted to his love for Theresa-hime, and seemed resigned to his fate.  She was extraordinarily unhappy, but seemed determined to live as she has sworn to.  An unexpected and beautifully bittersweet ending seemed to be in the offing…  And then they blew it all to hell and gone by pretty much abandoning everything the show had built up to slide in a diabetes inducing happy ending.

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku Ep 11 (Finale)

I’ve been thinking of this as a romance show, but I have to admit that thought was in error – it was a relationship show with strong slice-of-life elements.  Once I grasped that, the ending made sense.  There’s no big character arcs to wrap up, no sudden reveals to deal with, just the same ol’ same ol’ day-to-day of being an otaku in a relationship.  And, as I’ve said before, I’m OK with that.  For slice-of-life, simply running out of time and ending simply works (at least for me).

I must admit to a mild sense of disappointment that Naoya and Ko’s budding relationship got so little attention.  If I had to guess, I’d say that was an adaptation issue – I bet they just adapted the chapters of the manga more-or-less in chronological order.

    1. Nothing I’ve watched to completion was actually bad per se… (Well, with the possible exception of SAOA:GGO.) But in the end, I was disappointed by a goodly number of them.

  1. I probably dropped Comic Girls. I don’t think, at that point, I care much about Kaos’ success or lack thereof. The show never sold me on why she’s been given a mag-spot in the first place.

    Crossing Time… was a show I watched. (After the two parter, they’ve gone backwards with some reprises [luckily ommitting others], no more introduction of new characters.)

    Oh, I loved the finale with Mao (and the return of the magican rocker). Waste of my time? No way!

    I quite liked the last two episodes of MHA, actually. I’m sure they’ll ruin it with some revelation or decision, but so far I like it. If I were a villain, I’d probably start targetting their families about now. Tsuyu has a large one you can get rid of in a fairly media effective way; just saying. (Are they protecting relatives?) (You know what I’d love? Shigaraki abducting Deku’s mum and she going all mum on him. That would be a combo I’d love to see.)

    I’m fine with the ending of Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori. A sudden reconcilation doesn’t really suit the pace of the show. I sort of understand that it’s not the perfect finale, mood-wise, though. Doesn’t bother me personally, though.

    Tada-kun… yeah, if you can’t think of a happy end, don’t force one (with direct lampshading, no less). It’s so half-assed, you don’t even know what they’re going to do from now on.

    Wotakoi… yeah. Forgettable to me. I do think Nao/Kou is extremely cute, though (and that was another great performance of Yuki Aoi, as Kou, there – didn’t recognise her).

    A list of shows I watched this season and a rough ranking:

    –1– Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori (reliably relaxing watch of the season; most consistent – quality-wise – this season)

    –2– Hinamatsuri (great comedy)

    –3– Steins;Gate 0 (Much better than I feared, not quite up there with the original; excellent new characters that work really well with the cast)

    –4– Last Period (A really charming show about a Gaccha game, which actually warns you not to spend too much on the games… Wiseman are the Team Rocket I always wanted)

    –5– Hisone to Masotan (mostly cute, but I’m not sure what I think of the plot. Great art and likable characters, though)

    –6– Gegege no Kitaro (A children’s show is really effective at horror when it wants to; its social satire is simple but has bite)

    –7– Kakuriyo Yadomeshi (really grew on me; I’m fond of this show)

    –8– Uma Musume (Fun)

    –9– Toji no Miko (I’m quite happy with where it went, the denoument felt a little short)

    -10- Megalo Box (nostalgia trip; decent story; lots of untapped potential)

    -11- Piano no Mori (I’m into it for the piano playing – likable characters and good show, but wonky production with one of the worst CGI inlays I’ve ever seen)

    -12- Creature Family Days (I hope someone picks this up one day, so I can watch more than just 4 episodes – it’s good)

    -13- Golden Kamuy (Surprisingly, this works best if you watch it as a surreal road trip comedy)
    Wakaokami wa Shougakusei! (Cute short)

    -14- Hozuki no Reitetsu (rarely you can still see the genius that is the first season; much of it is just long and ongoing, though)

    -15- Amanchu Advance (For a while I liked it better than season 1, and then it went really strange, and I’m still not sure whether it fits or not)

    -16- 3-D Kanojo (strongest near the middle, good working through what romance means, often repetitive, though)

    -17- Tada-kun (lots of wasted potential, but some good scenes – some likable side-characters)

    -18- Persona 5 – The animation (Not the game. Some smart decisions when combining social links, otherwise uninspired)

    -19- Card Captor Sakura (takes a very long time to get going and then just ends; overall feels like a declawed cat)

    -20- MHA (ups and downs, as usual. I’m still watching after all this time, though – which means something)

    -21- Basilisk: Ouka Ninpouchou (Oh, this could have been good; the potential is there. Basilisk this isn’t.)

    -22- Wotakoi (good voice acting, sometimes cute, nothing special)

    -23- Grancrest Senki (oh dear – that’s what you get when you rush an epic)

    -24- Mahou Shoujo Ore (sometimes inspired, often bad, mostly so-so)

    -25- Comic Girls (dropped, but still up here – because the visuals are really gorgeous)

    -26- Shokugeki no Soma 3 (At this part simply voicing the manga might be better; and I still don’t much care for this arc)

    -27- Darling in the FranXX (technically not over yet, but it’s the trainwreck watch of the season)

    -28- Saredo Tsumibito wa Ryu to Odoru (No great weaknesses, but no great strengths either)

    -29- Akkun to Kanojo (“My Sweet Tyrant” is a stupid title that doesn’t fit; it can be cute at times, but I doubt I’d still watch it if it weren’t a short – oh, did you know it’s 2 cour?)

    -30- Fumikiri Jikan (…)

    I didn’t expect Toji no Miko to make my top 10, but there it is.

  2. Sorry for the late reply, kinda took a break over the mid-week holiday. (American Independence Day on Wednesday.)

    I’m fine with the ending of Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori. A sudden reconcilation doesn’t really suit the pace of the show.

    I didn’t expect a reconciliation, but I expected something more than a cold shut down. Rokuhoudou was mostly a happy place, and that kinda ruined the mood.

    And that a hell of a list of shows, I can see what you’re about watching a ton. Glad to see Hisone ranking so high, planning on watching it as soon as it’s available in the U.S.

    1. Shouldn’t be long now until Hisone to Masotan drops. Plot is decent but has its eye-roll moments, however characters and style more than make up for that. Look forward to it.

        1. I’m… surprised. I thought they’re waiting for the season to end to get it all out at once. Are they just clueless or are they deliberately trying to circumvent animefandom word-of-mouth so as not to taint the show for their “real” audience? (/paranoia)

          1. I don’t know that it’s clueless… And it’s not paranoia to say that (at least in the US) anime fandom isn’t their target demographic. Anime fandom isn’t that large a number, and is scattered wildy across traditional age/sex demographics.

          2. Oh, I’m sure they’re not primarily interested in the anime fandom as it exists. But also don’t think they’re deliberately pushing back the release, so they can avoid word-of-mouth from the “wrong” people. It’s not impossible, but I think it’s unlikely. That’s what I called paranoia.
