Worth Watching – A new feature!

Erased - Revival.pngY’all now how my brain works by now… should be doing one thing (like working on the seasonal posts that are soon due), but it insists on working on something else.  Anyhow, welcome to the first edition of Worth Watching – a new feature here at the Lounge exploring the world of AMV’s.  More on that at the end of the post, first let’s hit the jump and watch some d_mm good AMV’s!

Girls Last Tour (Shōjo Shūmatsu Ryokō) ♦ I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) (Teske)

This AMV is just lovely.  It astutely matches the concepts in the lyrics to the images from the anime.  I was going to highlight a couple of verses and how the maker handled them, but I couldn’t narrow it down…  Just go full screen and watch the whole thing.  Just do it!

I know about this one for a while, and I can’t believe I haven’t posted it before.  Or, if I have, it deserves being re-posted.

I can’t say I’m fond of the cover, but I will say that a using a version with a female singer was the perfect choice.  As much as I love the original, it simply wouldn’t have worked with this particular anime couple.

Tenth Doctor Tribute (David Tennant) ♦ I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) (Proclaimers)
With the caveat that I stopped watching early in the Twelfth Doctor’s run, David Tennant is my favorite of the New Doctors.  This is his favorite song, so enjoy this bonus AMV.

Erased (Boku dake ga Inai Machi) ♦ Stressed Out (Twenty One Pilots)

There are almost no words…  Blending the wistful reminiscences of Stressed Out with the time travel/do-over themes of Erased…  Bloody brilliant.  Simply. Bloody. Brilliant.

Obi and Shirayuki
Snow White with the Red Hair
(Akagami no Shirayukihime) ♦ Deep Sad Violin Beat Hip Hop Instrumental 2016 – Wishes (elementbeatzprod)

There’s a ton of romantic AMV’s out there, and those for Shirayukihime are almost exclusively about the headline couple – Prince Zen and Shirayuki.  But there’s another romance that doesn’t get nearly the airplay.  Even inside the show itself it’s practically blink-and-you’ll-miss-it….  Obi’s unrequited feelings for Shirayuki.

Poor Obi – deeply loyal to both Zen and Shirayuki, but for both of their sakes he can never be open with his own feelings.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride (Mahō Tsukai no Yome) ♦ Come To Me (Goo Goo Dolls)

Beautiful…  Just beautiful.   No, I didn’t tear up a bit watching this.  Why do you ask?

Your Lie In April (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso / Kimiuso) ♦ Kaleidoscope (A Great Big World)

Your Lie in April - Seeing in colors
A line from the first episode, and a critical scene that helps set the tone for the entire series…  T-Anime takes this and marries it to the concept of a kaleidoscope, which is normally associated with riotous colors.  The result is very special indeed.

Thanks for watching/reading this inaugural edition of Worth Watching!  I’ve actually been planning this for a while, but today everything just seemed to gel.

I love AMV’s, and I spend a lot of time wandering the blasted hellscape of on YouTube looking for good ones.  But as predicted by Sturgeon’s Law, good ones are few and far between.  (Frankly, he was an optimist.)  I’ve been posting them here and there for a while now, but I’ve decided to start collecting them together in a feature post.  I can’t say it’ll be a regular feature, but as I do with Worth Reading I’ll push one out whenever I have enough material or find one that I think needs attention.

As always, feel free to comment here or there…  But if you enjoy these, be sure and drop by the video’s page on YouTube and supporting the creators by giving a like or leaving a comment.

  1. A splendid idea – I’m already waiting for the next post of this feature. About these AMVs – well, now I want to rewatch Girls’ Last Tour and Shigatsu, and I want a new season of Shirayuki. I had a problem with the relationship between Elias and Chise but this AMV made me rethink if that was really true. In other words – all great picks.

    1. Glad you liked it! As to rewatching Shigatsu… No, that’s pretty firmly in the once-and-done category for me. Though I do rewatch the final ep now and again as it’s a masterpiece.

      1. That’s fair. I sometimes also rewatch the last episode alone – it’s one of the most emotional things I’ve ever encountered in anime. Also a textbook example of how to connect aural and visual experiences perfectly.

  2. Hey, I finally had time to watch these!

Girls Last Tour video was terrific! That one’s going straight into my AMV playlist. I confess I was never a big fan of the original Proclaimers song, but I actually did like the version the author chose for that video. I think the Shirayuki video is probably also going to end up on my playlist eventually too. I can pay its author the compliment of saying that video did far more to spark my interest in actually watching Shirayuki someday than every positive review I’ve ever read about it.

I have to admit that I didn’t fully connect with the Erased video, at least not like you did. I suspect that’s probably because I never watched past the first couple episodes. It felt like one you had to know the series to fully appreciate. I liked the song, though. I’d never heard it before, and it definitely seemed like a good fit for the material.

    1. Shirayuki is pretty darned good, though I prefer the first season to the second. (Even though the second has it’s moments.)

Yeah, you’re spot on the Erased video. It relies heavily on stuff from later in the series.

Did you not watch KimiUso? Can’t recall if you were part of the weekly discussion over at the Barrel. Four years ago this season… Wow, that time has passed in a flash.

      Anyhow glad you enjoyed!

  3. Yeah, I saw KimiUso. IIRR, I binged the first cour after the fall season ended and then joined the Barrel’s weekly discussions for the second half of the series. I didn’t comment on that AMV because I want to watch it again first; I did like it, but I feel like it’s one that I’ll really start to appreciate after three or four viewings when I’ve been able to study it more.
