Favorite Anime OP’s & OP Bingo! – Week 5 (Finale!) and the winners!

05 Anime OP Bingo - Week 5

And now…  the big reveal!  Who guessed the final squares?  Who wins the prize?  Whose cuisine will reign supreme!?!

Hit the jump and let’s find out!

G1 Sailor Moon Crystal
Moon Pride • Momoiro Clover Z

Sailor Moon
‘s OP has come a long way from the original Moonlight Densetsu (Moonlight Legend), a wistful tune of longing and romance…  Crystal’s OP is a flat out Girl Power anthem.  Sad that series sucked so badly.

Ah, girls have their own pride that they can’t give up:
The determination to fight on their own instead of thrusting their fate onto a prince

Shiny Make-Up, we’ll shine, gathering the starry sky
We’re not so weak that we can’t do anything but need protection

Correctly identified by Wingking and Aira in non-entry guesses.  (This was one of the ones I thought would be hardest!)

B3 Sword Art Online II OP 2
Courage • Haruka Tomatsu

When I rank the opening music to Sword Art Online, Courage is second only to Crossing Field (SAO OP 1).  However, thematically speaking, it’s far and away at the top of the list.  I’ve always loved the two girls growing and playing…  And then the jump-and-spin, and only Yuuki is left.  The arc is almost over when you learn what that means – but oh man, the feels when you do.

G4 Aldnoah Zero
Heavenly Blue • Kalafina

About the only useful thing about Aldnoah Zero is the awesome OP tune sung by the inimitable Kalafina.

I5 Yuki Yuna is a Hero / Yūki Yūna wa Yūsha de Aru
Hoshi to Hana • Sanshū Chūgaku Yūsha-bu (VA unit)

A beautiful song, and I love the harmony.  As the series progresses, the imagery of blooming flowers grows ever more poignant.

Correctly guessed by WingKing – and he becomes the second to cross the finish line with a Bingo!

Congratulations go out to both Marthaurion and Wingking for hitting Bingo!  But now, I’m in a bind as both entrants said they had no need of the prize…

However, in a comment to week 2’s post Wingking offered an intriguing alternative:

You know, it occurred to me afterward that if I did win I could have asked about the feasability of passing the prize along to one of my anime club kids instead as a reward for winning one of our games or contests, because I know some of them don’t have streaming subscriptions.

After contacting both winners…  I’ve chosen to go with this alternative.  Awarding the prize to Wingking with the understanding that he’ll pass it on to a deserving winner!

  1. Ah! Now that I can see all of them, some of them are kind of obvious. Though each line (outside of the initial one where I was with Marth) had at least one I wouldn’t have known. Fun idea, I’m glad you did it :)

  2. Congratulations to the winners! It was fun to play. (I’d have guessed none of the current batch.)

That Kalafina’s great needs no mention (Kajiura!), but I also really like Momoiro Clover Z, who I first encountered with their opening to the Mouretsu Pirates, and then the ending to Joshiraku. They’re fun and the music is actually interesting, too.

  3. Thanks, this was fun! For those who don’t know, I’m a professional librarian and run a teen anime club at my local branch. I was already planning to run an anime/manga-themed library scavenger hunt at our meeting next month, and this is really the perfect prize for that kind of activity.

On my iTunes playlist this week: 0/4, sort of. I bought Hoshi to Hana digitally – it was the first OP I ever bought, in fact – but that was before I had an iTunes account, so it’s on my laptop instead. Still absolutely one of my all-time favorite openings ever.

I never watched a minute of Aldnoah Zero, so I’d never seen that OP before, but I’m not sure there is such a thing as a bad Kalafina opening or ending.

    1. Coolness! Couldn’t be happier than see it go one of your kids.

You do know you can import music into iTunes? Half my playlist is imports.

Agreed on Kalafina… My first exposure to them was Magia (the ED for Madoka), and I’ve liked them ever since. They’re tied with WUG-chan for number of songs in my anime playlist. Shame all the crap they went through recently.
