Fall 2020 – Week 2

I’m late! I’m late! For a Very Important Date! Or at least compared to where I wanted to be at this point. Either way, we’ve got a bunch of words and a bunch of shows… Let’s hit the jump and run ’em down.

The shows that I’m watching are in bold, shows my wife and I are watching together are in bold italicsstrikethrough marks dropped shows and (*) marks shows that are watched but not regularly reviewed.

Dropout Idol Fruit Tart Episode 1
Ochikobore Fruit Tart

Hmm… Comic Girls meet the Wake Up Girls!? That’s kinda the vibe I’m getting. But I’m also getting a whiff of Love Live! School Idol Project.

The plotline is interesting enough… A bunch of unknowns fighting for survival. And the show even starts out with them having to deal with some off the stuff unknowns have to deal with. The problem is the characters, which are all pretty generic tropes straight out of a catalog. There’s room to grow, but the show really needs to find a groove. (And the boob jokes need to stop.)

I appreciated that the music performance was heartfelt and in-world… Though I do question how they synched so fast since they only became idols and a unit the day before. (I know, I know. Never question anime logic and don’t think about these things too deeply.

Status: Tentative Keeper

Iwakakeru! Sport Climbing Girls Episode 2

And now – the first tournament. A couple of meddling girls from other schools put Konomi off her game, but she manages to pull through anyhow. Once again her senpais are basically all but useless when it comes to supporting her. For the most part, she’s on her own. They may be a rock climbing team, but they’re acting like they’re each competing on their own…

If the show is smart, that’s an issue they’ll address.

Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club Episode 2
Love Live! Nijigasaki Gakuen School Idol Doukoukai

More school club shenanigans… Not quite the direction I’d expect Love Live to go, but they’re making it work.

Know what they’re not making work though? The music scenes. Once again, they’re music videos rather than in world performances… And the CGI is awful. I mean, barely better than Wake Up Girls! New Chapter – and that was a low budget, low rent show! (Y’know I love WUG-chan, but I do have to be honest.) This style of CGI still isn’t ready for prime time, but it has been done better.

The reveal of Setsuna’s identity wasn’t really a surprise for all the attention it was given. When it isn’t the childhood friend, isn’t it always the nerdy girl or the hardass with braids and glasses? Still, it’s big cliffhanger/turning point the show has badly needed.

Maesetsu! Opening Act

Girls who want to be stand up comedians … Seemed like an interesting premise. And having them be not so good at it is a logical place to start, that way the viewer could journey with them.

But, damm. Did they really have to keep repeating themselves? I mean I got it the third or fourth time they beat me over the head with that routine.

When I checked my watch because I was certain this interminable episode had to be over… It had ten minutes to go.

Dropped.

The Gymnastics Samurai
Taiso Samurai

Pretty firmly in the “WTF did I just watch?” category. But not in a good way. The basic idea was sound, but there were too many weird/dissonant elements. That “ninja” was just too much.

Dropped.

That is the Bottleneck
Sore dake ga Neck

That was… awful. The animation, writing, and overall production were at about the level I’d expect of a sophomore college effort.

Dropped. As quickly as I could manage. And if it wasn’t the middle of the day, I’d be pouring myself a stiff drink.

The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc Episode2
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei: Raihousha-hen

And now… we’re to the meat of the matter. Turns out the Americans are in Japan hunting one of their own, a deserter who’s gone rogue and seems to be in league with some kind of evil power. Which kinda surprises me, because Mahouka was one of the few shows that introduced magic without an occult component.

And of course, this being anime, the high school students are setting off to investigate. Has to be that way, or our main characters won’t have much to do for the next however many episodes.

Rail Romanesque Episode 2

The first episode left me confused, and the second didn’t really un-confuse me. Seems this one is squarely aimed at players of the VN, which I’m not.

Dropped.

TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You Episode 2
Tonikaku Kawaii: Fly me to the Moon

If any other show tried to drag out a small number of gags to fill out an episode, I’d be throwing things. Somehow, Tonikawa is making it work. Doesn’t hurt that the VA’s (especially Kitou Akari as Tsukasa) are really bringing their “A” game.

While I doubt it’s going to reach Tsuki ga Kirei heights… It’s looking to be same kind of show, one where it’s hard to say much each week. I’ll do my best though.

Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle Episode 2
Maou-jou de Oyasumi

That poor Demon King… He’s got some awful boneheaded subordinates on top of a Princess who simply won’t stay imprisoned.

Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina Episode 2
Majo no Tabitabi

Is it just me or was this episode just a little disappointing compared to the first? It was friendly enough, and that seems to be the main theme of the show… But somehow it didn’t sit well with me. Maybe it’s just because Elaina was just too nice to be believable.

This is also the second episode where the main magical activity of the witches seems to be combat. That’s an odd way to rank witches given that combat doesn’t seem to be their only skillset.

(*) With a Dog AND a Cat, Every Day is Fun Episode 2
Inu to Neko Docchi mo Katteru to Mainichi Tanoshii

=========

Is it just me or am I grumpier than usual this week? Eh, whatever. It’s been a busy week with this and that, and internet outages and power outages have been a pain over the last two days.

I’m hoping to get my weekly post out on Tuesday this season, but I’ll be happy if I can regularly hit Wednesday. Let’s see what happens when I hit my stride.

Anyhow, my watch list is now (more-or-less) set, and there’s no premieres left unwatched. Everything is fair game.

So, hit that comment box and let’s chat!

  1. After all those early drops, if you’ve got room for one more show, Akudama Drive (Thursdays on Funi) is worth a look.
Pros: Dystopian 80’s retro-futuristic in the Blade Runner/Akira vein, with a healthy dollop of attitude from 90’s Cowboy Bebop. Over-the-top funny.
Cons: MC girl is honest-to-a-fault and impossibly ditzy, to the point of “how does she survive in this world?”

  2. @Fruit Tart: I’ll heave a heavy sigh, here. Why did I ever think that they actually dropped out of the business and tried to make it bypassing the whole thing, instead of being forced into it by a pushy manager. Ah well. I liked the girls, I liked the art, and I especially liked the songs. It’s fun enough, and once I forget about my silly expectations I’m going to have fun with this one.

@Sports Climbing Girls: I don’t have much to say, because I dropped it very early in the episode. This show is a motionsickness hazard. I can’t say I cared much for spider woman, who is the last thing I saw. I’d have continued, though, were it not for the queasy cam.

@Maesetsu: I’m fine with it, but it’s really nothing special. We’ll see how far I get.

@Gymnastics Samurai: I kinda liked it, actually. It reminds me of a weird mash-up of Samurai Flamenco, Tsuritama, and Yuri on Ice!! Maybe a little Tiger and Bunny, too, but I haven’t seen a whole lot of this. The bird’s annoying me, though.

@Rail Romanesque: Yeah, I don’t get it either, but it’s short and pretty, so it stays for now.

@Tonikawa: I don’t have much to say, and I wouldn’t expect a Tsuki ga Kirei, either, here, but I do really enjoy the show. It’s about time to expand the cast a little, though.

@Sleepy Princess: I hope this show never changes. It’s just so much fun.

@Majo no Tabitabi: I liked this episode, but I can’t say that the story is the main draw. The show’s still among my favourites this season, mostly based on the art and direction, which I like a lot.

As for other shows: Magetsu Wahrheit Zuerst is surprisingly good. You’ve got an intriguing setting, and a story where good intentions trigger a chaotic series of events. The characters all feel like people you could meet, and pretty much every faction introduced so far is fishier than the people who work there. I’m not going to say it’s must-see good, but maybe keep an eye out for reviews and see if you’re interested. I have to be honest, many military themed anime with German in the title are… dodgy nationalist propaganda, when it comes to anime, so I didn’t expect to like this one. If there’s anything wrong with the show it’s that some of the scene lean too heavily into pathos, but on the whole it’s a really well done show and well worth a try. It’s very likely going to be among my favourites. (The difference between last seasons DecaDence and this one in the writing is readily apparent even after one episode.)

I’ll try ranking the shows I’m watching:

    Adachi to Shimamura
    Tonikaku Cawaii
    Sleepy Princess
    Majo no Tabitabi
    Magatsu Wahrheit: Zuerst
    Fire Force 2
    Golden Kamuy 3
    Haikyuu to the Top
    Osomatsu-san 3
    Talentless Nana
    Gymnastics Samurai
    Danmachi 3
    Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear
    Ikebukuro West Gate Park
    Noblesse
By the Grace of the Gods
    Hanyo no Yashahime (Inuyasha spin-off)
    Cat & Dog
I’m Standing on a Million Lives
    Akuma Drive
    Fruit Tart
    Moriarty
    Maesetsu
    Kamisama ni natta hi
Gochumon wa Usagi desu ka? 3
    King’s Raid
    Our Last Crusade
    Assault Lilly Bouquet
    Guraburu!
    Rail Romanesque

Among the shows I’ve dropped there are two I might pick back up: Sigrdrifa and Hipnosis Mic; they’re both shaky and not my thing, but I might actually like them if I stuck with them. I haven’t even tried Jujutsu Kaisen; maybe I should? In any case, anime is fun again. Much better than last season.

    1. Re: Fruit Tart I think this is definitely a wait-and-see show. It’s got all the parts to be fun, but it’s also got a lot of sand in the gears. I’m crossing my fingers.

Re: Sport Climbing Ah, so you missed the fox-girl. (You didn’t miss much.) That’s not a direction I’m fond of, the show has enough weaknesses as it is.

Re: Sleeping Princess Agreed! It’s a rare example of a one-note show that none the less manages to work. Too much more of that darned hero could spoil things.

I always forget just how many shows you watch… I don’t see how you do it. (Of course, not writing about them probably helps.)

      1. Yeah, I don’t think I could manage even a weekly post for all those shows. For what it’s worth, I’ve decided to drop Assault Lily Bouquet after the beginning of episode 3. It’s just not very good.

And I forgot to say that episode 2 of Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear was really episode 1 and it was more interesting. I’m a tand confused, though, as she can’t log out, and it seems she could, so maybe she’ll learn how?

There was a review posted on ANN yesterday that clears that up… There’s some time skipping involved, and the adaptation doesn’t quite make clear which direction the skip is and when.

          1. Ah, it didn’t occur to me that we’d get a time-skip back in episode one. It seemed like she just logged out…
