Fall 2020 – Week 7

More crazy in the world, but still – anime continues to air and we’re still talking about ’em. There’s some good stuff this week and a couple of more shows hit the discard pile. Hit the jump, and let’s see how it went!

The shows that I’m watching are in bold, shows my wife and I are watching together are in bold italicsstrikethrough marks dropped shows and (*) marks shows that are watched but not regularly reviewed.

Adachi and Shimamura Episode 6
Adachi to Shimamura

Adachi and Shimamura - more than just friends.

I really had no preconceptions going into this episode… There were a variety of routes they could take, none short of a catfight that I’d really be displeased with. (Mostly because there was no foundation for such a twist.)

Shimamura, she’s so self confident but also so clueless about what’s going on around her… Adachi, with her lack of confidence, isn’t much better but she took a HUGE step forward in admitting her feelings to herself. She was much more opaque in voicing them, but even the baby steps she took are in the right direction.

Dropout Idol Fruit Tart Episode 5
Ochikobore Fruit Tart

Watching this episode… I realized I wasn’t really enjoying it. And I really hadn’t been for a couple of episode now. Then, came the stalker routine. That’s when it really hit me that Hemo was a one-note character, and the others weren’t much better.

Dropped.

Iwakakeru! Sport Climbing Girls Episode 7

I appreciated the brief shift of the show’s POV to Jun. She drives a lot of the character relationships – but we haven’t spent any time inside her head. And now it makes more sense why she’s slowly opening up to Konomi.

And Konomi herself… Suddenly her ability to visualize a route is gone. But they didn’t really make it clear why. Fatigue? Overconfidence? Both are big standard in sports anime, and this isn’t a show that colors outside the lines.

The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei: Raihousha-hen

Got two episodes behind and now I find I have NO motivation to get caught up. For whatever reason, I’m just not enjoying this season.

Dropped.

TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You Episode 7
Tonikaku Kawaii: Fly me to the Moon

I want to call this episode an interstitial, which is better than filler because it provides a bridge from one thing to the next. Which isn’t quite fair as there were a lot of things brought out even if the actual plot didn’t progress much.

After a brief bit that highlighted the differences between our lovebirds, and their mutual attempts to overcome this… Chitose comes thundering in (again). And on this front, there was progress. Even though she will barely admit it to herself (let alone to anyone else), she’s finally starting to grasp how Nasa feels and why Tsukasa is attracted to him.

Occurs to me that Chitose also acts as a useful audience surrogate. Kind of an escape valve to prevent the Nasa/Tsukasa dynamic from becoming too sickly-sweet. She also serves to drop further hints about Tsukasa’s still mysterious background.

Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle Episode 7
Maou-jou de Oyasumi

When the Princess was kidnapped I expected maybe a Ransom of Red Chief type scenario… I totally did not expect her kidnapper to be oblivious to what’s going on… And I kinda expected the inhabitants of the Demon Castle to come to her rescue. (Rescue not recovery! It’s an important difference.)

Either way, funny as h*ll as usual. Funny often lies in execution not plot, and Sleepy Princess has mastered the art of making me laugh despite the surface repetition.

Strike Witches: Road to Berlin Episodes 5-6
Dai-501 Tougou Sentou Koukuu Dan Strike Witches: Road to Berlin

More shenanigans, nothing much worth discussing. This isn’t exactly a deep show…

With a Dog AND a Cat, Every Day is Fun Episode 7
Inu to Neko Docchi mo Katteru to Mainichi Tanoshii

Hidekechi remembering her previous dog… That was touching and heartbreaking. Though mostly a comedy, Inu to Neko does get emotional now and again. And when it does, it nails it.

Also, it really hit home given how many guinea pigs we’ve nursed through sickness and old age.

=========

That’s this week! A pretty good one all things considered.

I apologize in advance, but there will be no post next week due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Even the much diminished meal I’m currently planning will take a lot of effort. (Heck, just trimming it down to my wife and I is proving challenging!) I’ll be back the week after with a two week post.

Also, I’m going to be reposting the Yamato 2199 reviews from three years ago. (You’ll have already seen one of those pop up.) It’s one of those shows that doesn’t get near enough attention and this is my small way of trying to change that.

=========

Anyhow, how did you week go? What did you think of the shows this week? Drop a comment and let’s chat about anime or whatever!

  1. A&Sh isn’t a show that’s easy to talk about, but I really, really like it. Sleepy Princess had an outstanding episode, I thought. And I’m having fun with Tonikawa. One of the things I was worried about was that Tsukasa would become a stoic ideal or something, but it’s becoming ever more clear that that’s not the case. And the Cat&Dog show really nailed it this episode. Made me remember the final old-age days of our first cat.

Jujutsu Kaisen is slowly but surely expading its setting, while doing nothing obviously exceptional. Of all the shounen I’ve seen the way it treats its setting reminds me the most of Hunter X Hunter (not the characters, though; they feel more like Naruto to me). It’s a solid horror-themed shounen fighter.

    1. Sorry for the late reply, took a couple of days off…

I don’t A&Sh hard to comment on, on it’s face it’s pretty simple. There’s a lot of subtle, and important, stuff though. Expressing that stuff is hard.

I’m hearing lots of good things about Jujutsu Kaisen, but it’s way outside my wheelhouse… Glad you’re enjoying it.
