OK, so here’s the other reason I split this season’s anticipation post into two parts… I narrowed it down to two screenshots, and couldn’t decide between them! Not buying it? Not even a little?
Ah, well. OK then. Hit the jump and let’s take a look at the new & original anime I’m looking forward to checking out this season.
The shows that I’m watching are in bold, shows my wife and I are watching together are in bold italics,
strikethrough marks dropped shows and (*) marks shows that are watched but not regularly reviewed.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Suisei no Majo
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury
Rather than a screenshot or promo art and/or a plot summary as usual, I’m just going to post the prologue video… I mean, I was already curious from the first announcement – it’s Gundam after all.
But watching the prologue a few weeks back, I went right from curious to straight up fanboy. I’ve watched entire series that weren’t a good as this single episode.
Hands down my most anticipated new anime this season.
“The Mature Idol Project”
The latest project proposed by Manpuku Entertainment Productions, in a bid to revive the company. Experienced in the successes and failures of the business world, 6 middle-aged men now face the many hurdles of age and physical ability, whilst pursuing their goal to become idols.Fuji Creative Corporation
One of only two idol or idol adjacent show on offer this season… So it all but automagically earns a slot on my anticipation list. Even without that, I think I’d check it out as it’s a kinda different take on the genre. It’s nice to mix things up in a while.
But sadly, I must temper my interest with the fact that it currently has no announced legal stream.
VAZZROCK THE ANIMATION
The 13-episode anime follows the daily lives of the 12 members of the two units as they prepare for the upcoming “VAZZROCK LIVE FLAWLESS” in three months. Each episode focuses on a different duo, with each relationship explored in depth.Crunchyroll
Male idol anime are fairly scarce, so it’s pretty unusual to see two in one season. They’re also frequently harems or other forms of thinly disguised romances. But neither series on offer this season seem to be in that vein. So, that’s a solid reason to be interested.
But, two things concern me about this series. First, it’s part of a larger franchise that I’m seen none of. Hopefully it’s standalone. Second, it’s already been announced that each episode that each episode “focuses on a different duo” [within the two featured groups]. It’s not impossible to do that and maintain a decent narrative through line… The iDOLM@STER and The iDOLM@STER SideM both managed something close to that. But it’s difficult and requires some pretty sharp writing.
But I’m willing to give it a chance.
BOCCHI THE ROCK!
The story follows Hitori “Bocchi-chan” (“Loner”) Goto, a lonely high school girl whose heart lies in her guitar. She does nothing every day except strum her guitar by herself at home. However, one day she happens to meet Nijika Ijichi, who is looking for a guitarist for her group named “Kessoku Band.”Crunchyroll
It’s a music show, not an idol show, so that sounds promising. But it’s based on a 4-koma, which I have a mixed track record with… (They’re hard to adapt cleanly into a full episode length series.) On the other hand, Cloverworks has a solid production track record…
I’m thinking this one belongs in the “curious but skeptical” folder.
Do It Yourself!!
Building furniture and friendships have a lot in common. Intention, effort, and hard work are needed for both crafts. This is a story of girls in a DIY club building both as they carve out their futures. None of it comes easy, but that doesn’t stop any of ’em. Furniture, friendships, and the future—they’re building it all with their own hands!Crunchyroll
Cute girls? check. School club? check Friendship? check Weirdly specific subject matter? After Let’s Make a Mug Too (both seasons!) and After School Dice Club, you still have to ask? CHECK
Seriously, this is such a specifically Derek show I’m a bit offended they didn’t notify me personally and directly.
Cool Doji Danshi
Play It Cool, Guys
They’re so goofy, they’re cool.
Enter: a group of cool guys who seem like they’ve got that unapproachable swag. But look closer and you’ll find a bunch of dorks who’ve gotten the act down pat. So sit back, grab some popcorn, and enjoy watching these clumsy dudes try to look cool all day, every day.Yen Press
On one hand we have the outstanding Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto – where the MC is actually every bit as cool as cool can be. And that makes me curious about Play it Cool because it appears that the MC’s are faking it (until they make it?).
A concept so undeniably silly that you can’t help but be curious. Am I right?
Seriously, it’s tagged as a comedy and so long as it doesn’t fall into too deep of a rut it could actually be good.
URUSEI YATSURA (2022)
A remake of a series from the 1980’s… That could be good (Yamato 2199, Fruits Basket), or it could be horrible (Cutey Honey Universe).
But I find the idea of a male protagonist that’s an outright scumbag rather than a Nice Guy or some variant kind of attractive. It’s something you don’t see a lot of nowadays. Crossing my fingers here.
And after URUSEI YATSURA, we’re down to the “curious but don’t have much to say” tier, and that’s where I usually stop. Between sequels and new shows I just barely broke the traditional ten… But, so it goes.
I see I didn’t mention Yowamushi Pedal Limit Break… I’m curious about it too, but that’s mostly on the strength of the Anime x Para Cycling [Featuring “Yowamushi Pedal”] episode of the Animation x Paralympic series. (Linked rather than embedded because embedding is disabled.)
And I really, really need to write about that series someday…
Drop a comment and let me know what new series you’re anticipating!
