Over the last couple of weeks, life came at us pretty hard and I’ve been very distracted. Everything is fine, we’re just *way* behind on premieres, and so I’m going to skip first impressions post… Should be back in the saddle in time for the usual Week 3 post.
(I will however say, don’t sleep on Anne Shirley. It’s first episode was *amazing*.)
Oh, yeah, Anne Shirley hit the ground running.
Hit the ground running her mouth! :) And the 2nd ep doesn’t let up either.
Best apology ever.
Glad you’re okay. I was a little worried after you said you were ill.
I thought Anne Shirley was okay. Too much like the ’79 anime, though. Would have liked it to have more of it’s own identity. I also found Anne didn’t quite come together as a character for me. Every single scene would be fine on its own, but taken together it’s somehow less than the sum of its parts for me. For example, when she was really worried about the mean lady of the orphanage, this should have been character moment that gives more depth to her chipper personality. I get what they’re going for, but I don’t quite see it. It’s subtle and hard to put a finger on, though. The effect might go away with coming episodes (that sometimes happens).
Was it too much like the ’79 anime, or are both very faithful adaptations? I mean, it’s 110% familiar to me too, and I’ve never seen the ’79 anime. For better or worse, very few (and none that I know of offhand) adaptations of Green Gables take very many (if any) liberties with the source material.
I was talking style. You’re not going to mistake one for the other, but if you update 70ies technologies with the current crop, you basically get the same visual experience. It feels like they’ve watched the old one and decided it’s best to stick to tried-and-true. If you’re going to make the Xth adaption of something, you ought to have a discernible vision of your own.
The recent Gegege no Kitaro would be a good example of how to do that: same but it’s own thing.
Oh, and while I’m at it: the problem I had with Anne in episode 1 has indeed gone away in episode 2. I thought it might.
