Spring 2021 – Week 4 – Placeholder Edition

I’ve been sick most of the week…  and though I’m almost all better, that means a post didn’t get written.  So it goes.

Some episodes, I will comment on next week, but don’t let that slow you down.  We’re all caught up, so feel free to discuss whatever shows you’re watching. (I’ve left the list of shows intact in the body of the post so you can see what I’ve watched.)

Also, I just couldn’t resist screenshotting another of Koguma’s cheesy smiles as she overcomes another challenge.

The shows that I’m watching are in bold, shows my wife and I are watching together are in bold italicsstrikethrough marks dropped shows and (*) marks shows with no comments this week.

  1. First, even though it’s a day late, happy Yotsuba day!. Bummer you were sick, but hopefully you’re feeling better now.

Super Cub continues to impress me. They’ve really done a great job making me care about Koguma, which makes all the little baby steps and small victories she accomplishes feel so satisfying. I guess next week will be more of a focus on Reiko and her summer, and I’m looking forward to getting to know her better too.

Also, “Take that.” LMAO Never thought the quietest character of the season would give us the funniest line of the year so far.

Higehiro: So it turns out Gotou was lying about her boyfriend after all. Can’t say that was really a big surprise – there were plenty of hints that suggested it. And now she’ll be in the loop about Sayu also. That will be interesting, given Sayu’s worries about Gotou vis-a-vis her own situation. Still, it’s probably best that Yoshida’s coming clean about it. After getting understandably angry at Gotou for lying and hiding things from him, he’d look like a massive hypocrite if he turned around and did the same thing.

    1. And Happy Best Girl Day to you too! (Though your link is busted.)

Absolutely… I almost picked that for my screenshot. Though honestly, there’s so many good moments in most episodes. Slowly, step by quiet step, Super Cub has gotten Really, Really Good. I’d say it’s the show I most look forward to each week.

It’s also fun to see the various ways that phrase is translated… It was “in your face!” in Yorimoi. I wish I could pick out/spell the term so I could research it.

      re:Higehiro
I agree, good on Yoshida for not bullstuffing or bluffing his way through it. I mean, he did lie to Yuzuha, but it was more of a white lie than a falsehood. The truth is… complicated and prone to misunderstanding. And the full truth is not only not flattering to Sayu, but her story isn’t Yoshida’s to tell. It’s up to her to come clean, and she’s not ready yet. Coming clean means openly facing whatever demons lie in her past.

      1. Ah crud. Well this is what I was trying to link, though I feel a bit silly reposting four days later:

Ah, I didn’t catch that that line was a stock phrase. The one I always notice that never seems to get translated the same way twice is “Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.” I’ve looked it up before so I know roughly what it means and I get that there’s no direct English translation for it, but I’ve sometimes seen that one given multiple different subtitles even within the same episode.

I’ve heard it used a couple of times since Yorimoi, but it really stuck out here.

Translation is… an inexact art at best. Heck, I sometimes have problems translating from Sub Sailor to English.

  2. Aww, glad you’re better at least. I have little to say this week. I’m not really in anime mood lately. I’m watching shows a day late, for example, something that only happens once in a while. I couldn’t identify the classical piece in Super Cub this week, though I’m pretty sure I know which track it was (if there was one to begin with). In any case, Super Cub has laid the biker girl anime curse to rest. I’m thoroughly enjoying the show.

I was hoping I’d enjoy Killing Slimes a little more. It’s okay, but really no more.

It’s interesting how little I can think of when I don’t have post cues. I think my biggest problem is that I have always had a wonky sense of time; I don’t remember what happened this week or last in many cases and impressions blur together. Reading the post roots me in the week, so to speak. I never noticed until now. Interesting.

Odd Taxi has just made an existential/psychological episode about gaccha game addiction. I can’t predict the show at all, and I’m loving it.

Yeah, it’s pretty much “just OK mind candy”. But that’s OK actually.

Absolutely! So much better than it has any right to be. Reminds me a lot of Laid Back Camp – simple premise, outstanding execution.

Very interesting… But between Bless and than me, it’s been a weekly thing for how long now?

      1. I’m not sure, actually, when I started replying to Bless’ posts. It must have been sometime during 2014, I think? I’m pretty sure I was already replying to Junketsu no Maria, so winter 2015 at the latest. 6 – 7 years? I think so.

        1. Sometime in 2015 for me… I came aboard for the episode-by-episode coverage of Your Lie in April.

And damm, yeah, it really has been a long time.

  3. It’s a bit weird that a show that doesn’t try to be flashy at all and uses such a muted color pallete offers the best screenshots with loveliest smiles. Weird, but great.
