Anime Playlist – Angel Beats!

Fifteen years ago today, the classic anime Angel Beats! premiered. So there’s no better day for a new entry in the Anime Playlist series.

So, hit the jump and commence Operation Playlist!

“My Soul, Your Beats!”, Lia

(No, I don’t know why either WP or YouTube is not properly displaying the thumbnail.)

To me, this is one of a handful of truly classic anime OPs.  That’s probably because it’s one of the first OP’s that really and truly resonated with me.  There’s just something about the beat and composition.

(Yes, someday I should make a listicle post about the “top classic anime OPs”…  But first, I want to post all of them.)

And I have to admit that it was only sometime in the last couple of years that I realized the little “lightning bolt” kink in the line…  is supposed to be a heartbeat.  Which of course ties back into one of the main plot beats.

“My Soul, Your Beats!”, Yui (LiSA)

The show also uses a second, much harder rocking, version of the OP for one episode…  But, I chose the first version for my playlist and it’s the canonical version for me.  (Sorry Yui fans.)

I include here because it’s not a bad song (and I do have a softness for rock), it’s just not the best.  But that could also be because I have a habit of having a preference for the first OP of most shows.

“Crow Song”, GALDEMO (Girls Dead Monster)

The first band performance I saw in an anime, and I can tell you exactly why I love it…

See, I grew up with Saturday morning TV in the 70’s.  And the music in those shows was just, sad.  (I didn’t really get it at the time, but I certainly did by the time I was in teens.)  In the same vein, my musical tastes were largely formed in the early 70’s, my late pre-teens through my tweens…  Between the music of the 60’s and before the vast wasteland that was disco.  Right in the beating heart of the rock era.

So Crow Song smacked me right between the eyes.  Here was a performance in an animated show – and it was good.  Really, really good.  And it rocked.

And it’s stuck with me ever since.

While we’re here, I want to toss a quick link to an older post of mine where I discuss why Angel Beats was such a seminal show in my early days of watching anime.

So, that wraps it up – my favorite songs and music from the classic Angel Beats!.  Would you add this song to your playlist?  What’s your favorite GalDemo song?  (Braces self for controversy)

  1. Out of those, I defitely find the Crow song the best. Neither of the openings did much for me, though they’re not bad, either.

My first anime concert would probably have been Haruhi Suzumiya? (There might have been concerts I don’t remember in shows I’ve seen earlier; I’ve been watching anime since I was a child in the 70ies.)
