It’s just Mechanical Anime Reviews and myself to start, but I hope a bunch of other bloggers and readers will join in.  Hit the jump, and let’s get into the details.

Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 – group watch / collaboration?

Screenshot (169).png

Tossed this out on Twitter – thought I’d toss it out here too…  Would there be any interest in some kind of a group watch / collaboration on Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 (Star Blazers 2199)?

As a confirmed fanboy of the series, I’m up for it…  Your thoughts?  Let’s discuss in the comments.

Fall 2017 Week 5 – Sort of.

Well, it’s one of those weeks again…  Busy with other stuff, life happenings, and writer’s block = three strikes to presenting a post this week.  (Writer’s block comes up so often here at the Lounge that I swear I’m going to give it it’s own tag or category.)

I was going to use the image of two guys bowing I usually use for such posts, but I just couldn’t sit on this screenshot any longer… Konohana Kitan is slowly growing into such a good show.  I could have done without the creepy doll, but the second segment and especially it’s finale was so well done.

With that, let’s hit the jump and dig into everything going on…

Fall 2017 – First Impressions Part I

Well folks, buckle up and keep your hands and feet inside the ride! We’re going to take a look at the first few shows of the season (no turkeys so far) and their prospects.

After that, a quick look at my near term schedule, how I expect the fall season to shake out, and some goals for next season.

Worth Reading: Links, news, and views. 9/21-9/27

Welcome to this week’s edition of Worth Reading!  Yes the photo is related to one of this week’s links – but it’s so scrumptious looking I just had to post it first.

I seem to keep concentrating on articles about older shows and then this week
Tsuyuki at Anime Corps posts this very relevant article – Rewatch Dilemma.  He discusses the experience and the pros and cons of various approaches to rewatching anime you loved the first time through.

Also on the topic of ‘looking back’ , Ace at Humble Ace talks about The (not so) Small Ways Attack on Titan Appealed to 16-y/o Me.  I don’t think anyone is surprised that Eren is noticeable by his absence…  I can’t think of any other wildly popular anime with a lead character so widely loathed.

planetarian-kv

Jon at Jon Spencer Reviews takes a look at Summer 2016’s outstanding Planetarian.  For me Planetarian was my AOTS that season, a significant vote of confidence considering that Orange and Sweetness and Lightning aired the same season.  At only five episodes, it’s a quick watch and well worth seeking out.  It’s still available on Funimation and VRV.  I’ve had the VN sitting on my computer for months now (Steam had it on sale back in late winter) and I really need to play it soon.

The Weekend Otaku takes a different look at an older series – comparing the anime and live action version of Your Lie in April.  He examines how the a slightly different story emerged from the choices made to fit the long and wandering tale into a much more limited run time.

So far we’ve looked at an adaptation of a VN and a live action adaptation…  And continuing on that theme, Karandi at 100 Word Anime reviews the first volume of Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash.  There’s not many comparisons with the anime, but she does shed some light on the differences between the two.

Earlier in the week, the announcement that One Punch Man 2 would have a new director and be animated by a different studio caused quite a stir.  Scott at Mechanical Anime Reviews posts in response how he is worried about sakuga culture – basically he’s bothered by the concentration on the ‘look’ of the show.

I’ve been dreaming of visiting Japan for years, long before getting into anime…  (I refuse to use the term bucket list, it sounds so mechanical and I loathe it.)  While there are a few anime pilgrimages I’d like to make, much of what I want to do are either standard touristy stuff or off the beaten path touristy stuff.  (Such as visiting Basho’s grave, and other sites associated with haiku and haiku poets.)  With that in mind, Yukinocake at The Only Shinyuu Site posted a couple of interesting pieces:

  • Anyone who knows me well, knows why the next article catches my eye…  5 Quintessentially Japanese Autumn Foods You Must Try.  Food and cooking is another of my central interests, and if you’re exploring the season in a country you should go all in and try the associated foods.

Hit the jump for this week’s ‘below the fold’ material and a look forward to my posting schedule for the next few weeks.

Delay of post – one week penalty!

For various reasons…  (the heat, a busy week, downloading the latest version of Kerbal Space Program) I didn’t get last week’s post finished on time.  Rather than push it out incomplete, I’m just going to keep plugging away and work on a double entry for this week (the 18th).

There almost certainly won’t be an entry for the following week (weekly post would normally be on the 25th) as that’s the week of the County Fair… And I’ll be working the Fair the 23rd-27th.

Other than The Reflection, I am caught up, so if you have any comments on the week feel free!

New Feature – schedule page!

The things I do on Sunday mornings on my first cup of coffee…  Sometimes, they’re even a good idea.

Presenting – my viewing and posting schedule!

Last season, I kept a draft blog entry to keep track of my watching schedule…  As I was working on this season’s schedule I thought “why not make it public?”.    As I was cleaning it up to make it presentable, another idea occurred to me – “why not add links?”.  So I added links to the tag page for each show (including the archived list from last season, just because) and to the season category.

All that being said, it’s not that heavy a schedule this season, if only we can get caught up!  We’ve watched a ton this weekend, and with only one show for me and one show for us left to catch up on, we’re nearly there.  (We won’t get much done this afternoon though, we’re off to see Kiki’s Delivery Service at the theater.)  Then we can get started on the remaining shows we want to check out.  I’ll try and get out a post this week on the Season So Far, but my RL schedule is still a little wobbly.

A light appears at the end of the tunnel!

good-news-everyone

Ok, so the thing that’s kept me crazy busy over the last two weeks is starting to wind down and I’m at least occasionally finding my head above water.  Now to figure out how to re-start in mid stream…

Hit the jump, and let’s look at what’s coming up over the next few weeks!

Mostly about the weekend, but also about anime.

Omake Gif Anime - Demi-chan wa Kataritai - Episode 13 [BD] - Summer Festival Fireworks.gif

Wow – the 4th of July holiday has really messed up my writing schedule.  My lovely wife took most of Monday off, which made it essentially a four-day weekend.  We got a ton of much-needed chores done (yay, new bookshelves in the bedroom!) but we also had fun and ate well (YAY! for having a new grill!!).  The best part was the strawberries…  Fresh from a local farm, we served them over homemade cheesecake and made strawberry ice cream.

Nothing matters but the weekend
From a Tuesday point of view…

But I digress…   We’re caught up on premiers and I plan on getting out my first overview post today or tomorrow.  The Atom finale is this weekend, so Mon or Tues I’ll get the final post for Spring 2017 up which will also catch up other ongoing shows.  I’ll also be talking about the special ep of Demi-Chan which aired over the last weekend.  (If you haven’t seen it, Crunchy has it, go watch it!  It’s very good.)  The season wrap-up post should follow shortly thereafter.

Other digressions, and also some stuff about anime, after the jump.
